What is Spiritual Companionship?
Spiritual companionship is the process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey. Spiritual Companionship exists in a context that emplasizes growing closer to God (or the sacred, the holy, or a higher power). Spiritual Companionship explores a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. Simply put, spiritual companionship is helping people tell their sacred stories everyday. (Spiritual Companionship is not covered by medical insurance.)
What happens in Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is a helping relationship. The Director, or Spiritual Companion, helps a person look honestly at his or her relationship with God. The Director/Companion helps a person to notice and respond to God's communication in his/her prayer and life experiences. The focus on a person's experiences of God distinguishes spiritual direction from psychological counseling and therapy. The Director/Companion and the person try to recognize and comprehend what God seems to be saying to them. The Director/Companion does not tell a person what to do, but may offer suggestions regarding prayer, prayer methods, or life issues. Instead, the director/companion helps the person pay closer attention to the inner movements and feelings that lead one toward or away from God.
How often does one meet with a Director/Companion?
A person generally meets with the director/companion about once a month for an hour to talk about life, prayer experiences, and experiences of God. These discussions are strictly confidential.
What is the fee for Spiritual Direction?
